Building A Multi-Modal, Sustainable Street

To achieve its mission of revitalizing West Colfax, WCBID has undertaken to recast West Colfax as Denver’s sustainable Main Street by making Colfax more multi-modal, pedestrian-friendly, and energy efficient. Sustainability projects include changes to the roadway to calm traffic and buffer pedestrians, streetscaping with solar pedestrian lights, and providing resources and incentives for energy efficiency improvements. The goal of these street and property investments is to make West Colfax more pedestrian friendly, transform the curb appeal of key retail locations, attract stronger, neighborhood serving retailers and their workers, and encourage others to make similar green investments in their property and businesses. All of these, together with the new light rail line, will unify West Colfax’s image around sustainable living and help create a thriving Main Street.

Check out the street to see more than $1.2 million in ROW projects that are already implemented, including the gateways to West Colfax, solar pedestrian lights and sustainable public art.

Colfax GO Bond funding for enhancements to Colfax crossings are now advancing with Broad Public Support.</strong >From a number of planning processes and surveys, most notably at during Re-imagine design demonstration, WCBID has heard many times that crossing Colfax is a major issue. Beginning in 2016, we turned to developing designs to show how the infrastructure on Colfax be improved. Working with a local engineering firm HDR and the City, we completed concepts for enhanced crossings near the center of the district. We are pleased to say that with the support of Denver Public Works, nearly 1800 petitioners and City Council, Mayor Hancock approved $500,000 in capital improvement project funding for 2017 to develop the design for concepts in all four Colfax BIDs in Denver including WCBID. With broad public and Council support, this summer $20,000,000 in funding for this project to construct the improvements to Colfax crossings was included in the Mayor’s GO Bond funding package. The funding includes the WCBID and Colfax, Bluebird and Mayfair Colfax BIDs that make up the Colfax Collaborative. Please check out more project details here.
