Re-imagine W Colfax!

The urban renaissance happening along Colfax means more and more destinations for bikers and pedestrians to visit, but getting there doesn’t always feel safe or comfortable on foot or bike. Re-imagine West Colfax transformed the Avenue, for one day, into a more people-oriented street with temporary installations including enhanced crosswalks, median refuges, wider sidewalks, small pop-up parks along Colfax, and several types of bike lanes that allow riders to test what it feels like to ride on each.

Check it out: Design Demonstration Video here

And below are some images that show all the fun from the event.  Also check out this great timelapse video of parklet construction.

A key goal of the demonstration was gathering community feedback on the temporary designs to help inform plans for longer-term, more permanent changes to the design of West Colfax.  The ideas tested out on Colfax come directly out of the work project partners have done over the past year to assess pedestrian and bicycle conditions along the Colfax Corridor; gather community input on preferred biking and walking destinations and routes, and priorities on redesigns to improve the pedestrian, bicycle and retail environment; and explore those range of possible redesigns with Denver Public Works, CDOT and RTD.  For results, please see design demonstration process and analysis here.   More information on the technical process used to develop the design here

Last but not least, a huge round of thanks to all who helped us to re-imagine W Colfax!  We couldn’t have done it without outstanding business and community participation; our team of PlaceMatters, WalkDenver, Radian and Groundworks; dozens of volunteers– from urban designers and engineers to community members to CU urban planning students; Denver Public Works, CDOT and RTD; and financial and material donors (partial list shown on the banner below–plus Nava Real Estate)!
